 New Delhi was established as the imperial capital
after the British moved here from Calcutta in 1911. The city beautifully blends
modernity with tradition with its towering skyscrapers and tree-lined avenues
as they meet the Mughal architectural excellence of Purani Dilli (old Delhi).
The foundation of Delhi was constructed by Shah Jahan, during the rule of the
Mughal empire. Much of New Delhi was planned by Sir Edwin Lutyens, who laid out
a grand central administrative area during the British rule in the 1800s.
Today, Delhi has become a culturally colorful city combining contrasts with its
cosmopolitan character.

of the city.

Shah Jahan's seventeenth-century capital of Shahjahanabad lies 3km away from
Connaught Place. The Red Fort, Jama Masjid (Asia's largest mosque) and Chandni
Chowk (oldest market of Delhi) are located here, easily accessible by the Delhi
Metro.

India Gate, India's only war memorial located near Cannaught Place.
