Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta) is the capital of the state of West Bengal. It is located in eastern India on the banks of river Hooghly. It is more than 300 years old. Kolkata served as the capital of British India until 1911. It is a city that casts a deep impact on tourists and scholars from all over the world because of its tremendous vitality and warm hospitality.
Apart from being home to luminaries and world citizens such as Rabindranath Tagore, Mother Teresa, Satyajit Ray and others, Kolkata's importance lies in the fact that the impetus for modern and liberal education in India, cultural activities and progressive socio-cultural movements started here in the mid-19th century, referred to collectively as the Bengal Renaissance.
The city remains one of India's most important centers of education and learning. It boasts of the oldest Indian university, the University of Calcutta, founded in 1857.
